Kindergarten Classes

We have created a unique thematic curriculum that offers multi-dimensional, hands-on exploration of subjects to provide the highest level of comprehension. Our curriculum leads students to success through a pathway to early literacy that embraces the whole child. Our program offers developmentally appropriate learning opportunities to build the child’s social and academic skills and to prepare them for the transition into first grade, and for school in general.

With the use of Learning without Tears, students will strengthen essential fine and gross motor skills through hands-on materials, learn through purposeful play, and explore the language through connected text. Students will focus on the foundational skills for reading including print concepts, phonological awareness, phonics, word recognition, and fluency.

Areas of instruction will include English/language arts, history, and social studies, mathematics, science, health and physical education, and technology education. We follow along with the Virginia State Standards of Learning.

To be eligible for kindergarten in Virginia, students must have turned 5 years old on or before September 30.

First Grade

Our first-grade students will follow a curriculum based off the Virginia State Standards of Learning, along with Common Core Standards. Students will focus more in depth on skills taught in kindergarten such as:  adding and subtracting, tens and ones, telling time, categories, nouns, verb tense, time order, and more. Students will work toward writing goals to be able to write opinion pieces, write informative/explanatory texts, and write narratives.

Students will attend weekly resources classes such as STEM, music/movement, and fine arts. We also implement IXL Learning. IXL applies technology in a thoughtful and innovative way to unlock learners' innate curiosity, creativity, and desire for knowledge. IXL is personalized learning for all students. Students will continuously be assessed throughout the year to make sure they are meeting their goals.
